Apollo 1 - Remembering the ill-fated crew, 45 years on:
On January 27, 1967, a fire erupted during a seemingly routine test, resulting in the death of the first Apollo crew. Commander Gus Grissom was one of the original Mercury astronauts, and had been the second American to launch into space. Ed White was the first American to perform a spacewalk, while Roger Chaffee was on his rookie mission. It would be 20 months before the Apollo program would resume, with a redesigned (and safer) spacecraft, that would ultimately land men on the Moon, and return them safely to the Earth.
